If you have permission to edit an article, the settings button will list Edit as an Option
If you'd like additional instructions on how the editor works, you can search for JCE Editor. Youtube has some instructional videos (such as Joomla 3 Tutorial #7: Using the Joomla Content Editor (JCE)).
